The apple blossom trees were in full bloom during Vanessa and Dixon’s shoot.
The only thing we know about Vanessa and Dixon is that they love banana-oreo-vanilla-peanut butter milkshakes. The rest is a mystery.

Carla and Tom dancing in the Hawaiian sunset.
One of my favorite things about this industry is building relationships and getting passed down the line from friends of friends. Carla and Tom came to me from a long line of referrals from previous weddings, so it just so happens that at their wedding, two of my past couples were in the wedding party. I loved this about their wedding day. When I know the majority of the people in a wedding, it is an absolute blast. Everything is more personal, including the photos I’m able to take. I can get better reactions, more emotional expressions, and can capture real moments. And let me tell you, Carla and Tom’s day was full of these real moments.
They picked my absolute favorite place to get married; Maui, Hawaii at an old Owalu plantation. The couple wanted to do things the traditional way by waiting until Carla’s walk down the aisle to see one another. When she did walk down the aisle for the first time, it could not have been more perfectly lit with Hawaiian light, bringing out the green and blues of the island. Carla was glowing and had a huge smile on her face; you could tell she was SUPER excited to see her soon to be husband.
These two were super playful, adventurous, and up for absolutely anything. This is always so refreshing and it pays off in the incredible photos that turn out. We had so much fun shooting the bride and groom shots. It really doesn’t get any better when you have an amazing couple, Maui as your backdrop and endless tropical beauty. There were so many places to shoot that the challenge became “What can we get in with the time that we have?” I’m telling you I could have shot Carla and Tom all day. Congratulations you two, thanks for letting me be a part of your amazing day!

It was so much fun that Rachael and Jim brought along their wonderful dog.
Rachel and Jim were brought together by the Blackhawks the night they won the Stanley Cup. They ended up in the same place because of mutual friends and Rachel noticed Jim and his “gorgeous smile” as she calls it right when she walked in. Although Jim had his eyes glued to the game, and Rachel left early because of class in the morning, Jim made a point to approach their mutual friend after Rachel had left and ask her number. It was later that week that they planned their first date!
Rachael says she loves that “we can do anything together and have fun whether it’s a night in or a night out or a Saturday morning spending time with our dog.” I was lucky enough to witness this in person during their engagement shoot. They were SUCH a fun couple, which made them so easy to shoot. They even brought along their newly adopted dog, Jade! We got some beautiful shots of the three of them with the fall colors as well as stunning pictures of Rachael and Jim on the Stone Arch Bridge and down on the banks of the Mississippi. I cannot wait to see what new kind of fun you bring to your wedding!
Angela and Dan’s love was truly unique.
Angela and Dan met on eHarmony.com right before Angela’s subscription was about to expire. She didn’t have any plans to renew and had been sick of dead end dates, however when her and Dan met they had 3 dates within a week despite the fact that they lived 100 miles apart. These two had an instant connection! As a photographer, I can usually get a pretty good read on the couples I work with, and I could tell that these two were extremely into one another. At their reception, Angela and Dan were side by side the entire night and it seemed as if, to them, they were the only two people in the world. I don’t see this often, but when I do I know that it means a couple’s love will last. This is a one of a kind love.
Angela and Dan got married in late November at the Gale Mansion in South Minneapolis. Their wedding had an autumn theme with oranges, yellows and purples as accent colors. Even the leaves outside were bright yellow! They picked the absolutely perfect time to get married. It was a small wedding, but because of its size, it was also a very intimate wedding. Angela was an absolutely stunning bride and her very pretty smile never left her face!
My favorite part about the wedding was photographing the bride and groom shots. As I mentioned before, it is not often that I find a bride and groom that are so into one another. This made the photo shoot so easy and natural, every wedding photographer’s dream! Their reception was also a blast. One of my favorite parts was how the bride’s nephew stole the show on the dance floor and in the pictures; he was the life of the party. What a stud!
These two families were very tight knit. Angela’s sister was her maid of honor and the two had been best friends forever. During her maid of honor speech, Angela’s sister brought tears to everyone’s eyes. Angela and Dan had a very small wedding party, each with only a maid of honor and best man. This just goes to show how truly down to earth the couple is. They were so easygoing, and I know that their love will last forever. Congratulations Angela and Dan, you truly are one of a kind!

“I-94 between Chicago and Marine on St.Croix saw thousands of miles from both Cody’s green pickup and Sarah’s trusty Ford Taurus.” This is what Sarah told me with a playful giggle, and it proves that even when they lived hundreds of miles away from one another, these two couldn’t stand to be apart. This is when you know you’ve found the one; when even though you are hundreds of miles apart, your true love makes it feel as if there is no distance that can separate you. You got lucky, Sarah and Cody!
Their love story was one that was traveled just like the long stretch of highway road that separated them. Eventually it would lead them to each together, but it would take a few miles and a few years before they realized they belonged together. They first met in 3rd grade in Mrs. Wistricill’s classroom. It was their freshman year of high school, at 15 years old, that they would share their first kiss. But the lane to their love wouldn’t find them again until 2012, the summer before Sarah started medical school. Nursing broken hearts and failed past relationships, the two found solace in one another. Cody would convince Sarah that after years of friendship they should give each other another shot. As they navigated that stretch of pavement and the distance that separated them, so to did they navigate their relationship and eventually, they just knew…
When I arrived in downtown Chicago to shoot Sarah and Cody’s engagement photos, I knew that they were absolutely meant for one another. I loved when we were shooting in Millennium Park. There are so many great backdrops here, and we took some photos in places we probably shouldn’t have. As they always say, “it’s better to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission!” I’m so pumped to photograph even more of your unique love at your wedding!
