Congratulations to the St. James Hotel!

I never thought I would say this, but I’ve got a crush… on a hotel.

The beautiful St. James hotel, a hidden gem nestled in the small town of Red Wing is one of my favorite venues for wedding photography.  And guess what?  The hotel was just awarded WeddingWire’s 2014 Couple’s Choice Award!  The St. James Hotel was just one a few vendors chosen for an award from the wedding planning website’s pool of 200,000 wedding vendors nationwide!  Awards given out by WeddingWire were based on quality, service, responsiveness and professionalism.

This comes as no surprise to me, as I’ve had the pleasure of playing the role of wedding photographer at the classic Victorian style hotel several times in the past.  Each time I photograph a wedding at the hotel I get to enjoy countless breathtaking and romantic settings the hotel lends to my wedding photography, but also the amazing job they do hosting these special events (a total of 60 in the year of 2013, to be exact).

I want to congratulate the St. James hotel on this amazing accomplishment. You guys deserve it!

Check out some pictures below from my past weddings at the hotel… you just might develop your own hotel crush!

MN Wedding Anniversary Photos

One of my most loyal clients ever wanted to get her 5th wedding anniversary documented with a wedding anniversary photo shoot in Minneapolis…. My little sister!  Jennae and Tyler have been together ever since high school. I remember when they started dating… she would bring him home and swear up and down that they weren’t boyfriend and girlfriend. But we all knew that if they weren’t yet, they would be. A few years later, their wedding was one of the first weddings I ever photographed.  🙂

For their wedding anniversary photos, we went to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden for some classy MN photographs.  Jennae and Tyler are always fun to work with, and I’m not just saying  that because I’m biased… ok, maybe I am.  But you can tell from the photos that these two were made for each other, and that they love to have fun in front of a camera!

Happy Anniversary, Jennae and Tyler!

By the way, my little sis makes some outstanding custom-made lace adorned wedding shoes!  Check out her shop on Etsy!

Como Park Engagement Photos

Shelly and Joe chose to do their engagement photo session at Como Park in St. Paul, Minnesota.  We had some drizzly weather, but everyone knows how much I love taking pictures in overcast conditions… because the lighting. is. PERFECT!  Plus, it was warm, and who doesn’t love a little stroll in the rain when it’s still warm out?  Thanks for being so much fun to work with, Shelly and Joe! I’m excited to photograph your wedding later this year!

Champlin, MN Newborn Portraits

This July, Marisa and Nate welcomed their beautiful baby boy Ethan into the world, and into their newly built home in Champlin, MN.  I had the pleasure of visiting shortly after Ethan was born to take some MN newborn portraits.  The proud parents were relaxed and welcoming, despite having moved into their new home just one week before Marisa went into labor!  Their house was so beautiful and well kept that I thought these two must be superheroes.  Ethan was very calm for his photo shoot, but he didn’t go to sleep like we were hoping… so a lot of his newborn photographs feature him squirming around and squinting up at us.

Marisa and Nate’s adorably tiny yorkie pup, Charles, joined us for a few of the family pictures.  He doesn’t quite know what to make of Ethan yet… but he was sure glad we put a little peanut butter on the baby’s cheek for him to lick off so we could get some “doggy kisses” pictures.  At the end of the portrait session, Marissa and Nate mentioned that they wanted a picture taken “downstairs” for their parents.  I assumed they wanted to showcase their beautifully finished basement, but they led me right through it, over to a plain white door, and when they opened it I was amazed to see… a basketball court!  It was complete with a giant Minnesota Gophers logo on the floor, and a Gophers blanket for Ethan to snuggle up in for more pictures – pictures inside a room in which he will be spending lots and lots and lots of time in the future.  Congratulations Marisa and Nate!

One Great Reason to have an Engagement Shoot

An engagement shoot is most generally thought of as a great way for you and your fiancé to celebrate your commitment to one another. But there’s another great purpose it serves… It’s your time to practice!

Any great athlete will tell you how important it is to practice before a game. And any great singer isn’t going to step on stage without having rehearsed a few (hundred) times… So why approach your wedding day any differently?

Plain and simple, your wedding day is YOUR day. It’s your “big game” and it’s your “sold-out show.” Sure, you’ve already planned to practice in some ways; hosting a rehearsal of the ceremony and running through your vows before you say the big, “I do.” But do you know how comfortable you are in front of a camera?

An engagement shoot offers you some time to get acquainted with your wedding photographer, and also with the idea of getting hundreds of pictures taken of you. (Your photographer wants to make sure he doesn’t miss any magical moments on your wedding day, so remember, you will be in front of the camera A LOT.)

Make it a point to have a practice round with your photographer so he can get to know you and your other half a little better. Then, you don’t have to worry about stiffly posing in front of the lens when your big day comes around. You will thank your photographer, and your photographer will thank YOU for the opportunity to get a little more comfortable with each other.

So go ahead and book that engagement shoot already! Because a little practice can go a long way!
