Congratulations to the St. James Hotel!

I never thought I would say this, but I’ve got a crush… on a hotel.

The beautiful St. James hotel, a hidden gem nestled in the small town of Red Wing is one of my favorite venues for wedding photography.  And guess what?  The hotel was just awarded WeddingWire’s 2014 Couple’s Choice Award!  The St. James Hotel was just one a few vendors chosen for an award from the wedding planning website’s pool of 200,000 wedding vendors nationwide!  Awards given out by WeddingWire were based on quality, service, responsiveness and professionalism.

This comes as no surprise to me, as I’ve had the pleasure of playing the role of wedding photographer at the classic Victorian style hotel several times in the past.  Each time I photograph a wedding at the hotel I get to enjoy countless breathtaking and romantic settings the hotel lends to my wedding photography, but also the amazing job they do hosting these special events (a total of 60 in the year of 2013, to be exact).

I want to congratulate the St. James hotel on this amazing accomplishment. You guys deserve it!

Check out some pictures below from my past weddings at the hotel… you just might develop your own hotel crush!

One Great Reason to have an Engagement Shoot

An engagement shoot is most generally thought of as a great way for you and your fiancé to celebrate your commitment to one another. But there’s another great purpose it serves… It’s your time to practice!

Any great athlete will tell you how important it is to practice before a game. And any great singer isn’t going to step on stage without having rehearsed a few (hundred) times… So why approach your wedding day any differently?

Plain and simple, your wedding day is YOUR day. It’s your “big game” and it’s your “sold-out show.” Sure, you’ve already planned to practice in some ways; hosting a rehearsal of the ceremony and running through your vows before you say the big, “I do.” But do you know how comfortable you are in front of a camera?

An engagement shoot offers you some time to get acquainted with your wedding photographer, and also with the idea of getting hundreds of pictures taken of you. (Your photographer wants to make sure he doesn’t miss any magical moments on your wedding day, so remember, you will be in front of the camera A LOT.)

Make it a point to have a practice round with your photographer so he can get to know you and your other half a little better. Then, you don’t have to worry about stiffly posing in front of the lens when your big day comes around. You will thank your photographer, and your photographer will thank YOU for the opportunity to get a little more comfortable with each other.

So go ahead and book that engagement shoot already! Because a little practice can go a long way!

Engagement Photos at the Minneapolis Sculpture Gardens

The Walker Art Center Sculpture Garden near downtown Minneapolis is an awesome location for Minnesota engagement photography.  Alicia and Brady wanted some engagement pictures taken in front of the iconic “Spoonbridge and Cherry”  (an obligatory shot for any Minnesota native).  I especially love the photos we took on the beautiful Irene Hixon Whitney Bridge (although, locals generally refer to it as the “Walker Bridge” or the “Loring Greenway Bridge.”  In fact, it’s real name is not at all well-known!  I hope you learned something new today…) that hangs over “spaghetti junction” (sixteen lanes of streets and highways, merging together into one big, huge, but surprisingly congestion-free mess between the Walker Art Center and Loring Park) because of the cool vortex effect made by the geometric structure.  Love that bridge…   Anyway, congratulations, Alicia and Brady!  I can’t wait to photograph your wedding!

Minnehaha Falls Park Engagement Pictures

I love taking engagement photos at Minnehaha Falls!  It’s so close to Minneapolis and still feels like you’ve been transported to a different place.  I suppose that’s one of the perks of the constantly changing landscape found throughout Minnesota. I spent an afternoon with Miu Shan and Nick at Minnehaha Falls taking their engagement photos. The lush green of the trees and the beautiful falls made for some great engagement photography.  You can see the love these two have for each other so easily.

Spring Engagement Pictures at the Stone Arch Bridge

Jessie and Rob's Stone Arch Bridge Engagement Photos by Brovado Weddings
I shot Jessie and Rob’s engagement photos on and around the Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis, MN.  We spent a beautiful Spring day outside and got some great shots in front of the beautiful blooming trees and the gorgeous downtown Minneapolis skyline. Rob even coordinated his pink shirt perfectly for some photos we took under falling pink petals of an apple blossom tree!
