One surprising topic I am frequently asked about is the name-change process after saying the big \u201cI do.\u201d\u00a0 While the wedding itself usually gets most of the attention\u2026 the decorations, the dress, the flowers\u2026 anyone planning a name change will benefit from knowing just how much goes into that process.<\/p>\n<p>I did some digging to see if the Internet offered some sort of name change mega-checklist that would cover all of the bases; a one-stop shop that wouldn\u2019t leave newlyweds exhaustively scouring the web for answers. \u00a0Needless to say, I came up short in my search. \u00a0I found that Websites either covered only the basic name-change processes, or they required some annoying hoops to jump through before revealing more detailed information.<\/p>\n<p>So I took matters into my own hands. \u00a0I did my research. \u00a0And now, I present to you\u2026 <em><strong>THE ULTIMATE NAME CHANGE CHECKLIST!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>#1 COVER THE BASICS: Take care of t<\/strong><strong>he three basics (marriage certificate, Social Security card and state I.D.) as soon as possible. \u00a0Once you get these out of the way, <\/strong><strong>changing your<\/strong><strong> name on any other legal documents, accounts, or records will be much easier.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18125\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4666\" height=\"3111\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-7.jpg 4666w, https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-7-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-7-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-7-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-7-50x33.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 4666px) 100vw, 4666px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE<\/span><\/strong> (WHAT YOU NEED: Marriage license)<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re married! \u00a0Congratulations! \u00a0Now, the marriage license you signed post-nuptials needs to go to your local courthouse. Your wedding officiant will often take care of this part for you, but you may have to do it yourself. \u00a0You can get a copy of your marriage certificate at the courthouse (or from them via mail) after they receive your marriage license. \u00a0Each state has its own process for obtaining a <a title=\"US Marriage Laws\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usmarriagelaws.com\/marriage_licenses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">marriage license and certificate<\/a>, so be sure to check your local laws for processes and fees.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">DRIVER&#8217;S LICENSE OR STATE I.D.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(WHAT YOU NEED: Marriage certificate)<\/p>\n<p>Head to your local license center or DMV to take care of this one; it can\u2019t be done via mail or online. \u00a0All you need to bring is your marriage certificate to prove that your wedding did in fact happen, and you aren\u2019t just changing your name because you\u2019re looking for something fun to do with your day (hopefully you have better things to do than stand in line at the DMV).<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re applying for a REAL ID, you&#8217;ll need an updated Social Security card (so do this first!), proof of your residency, your old identification card, and your marriage certificate!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: center;\"><em>*Bonus! Update your name on your vehicle title WHEN you go in for a new I.D. \u00a0You will need your marriage certificate for this one too. \u00a0<a title=\"MN Title Transfers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dmv.org\/mn-minnesota\/title-transfers.php#Making-Name-Corrections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click here<\/a> for information about updating your vehicle title in Minnesota. \u00a0Also, <a title=\"DMV Title Transfers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dmv.org\/title-transfers.ph\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this site<\/a> has vehicle and driver-related information for every state!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">SOCIAL SECURITY CARD<\/span><\/b> (WHAT YOU NEED: Marriage certificate, your old Social Security card and current form of I.D.)<\/p>\n<p>Unless you feel comfortable mailing in the originals of all of the important documents you need to present, plan on bringing these items to your <a title=\"Social Security Offices\" href=\"https:\/\/secure.ssa.gov\/apps6z\/FOLO\/fo001.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">local Social Security office<\/a>. You should also be prepared to wait in line for up to an hour or two, depending on the location of your Social Security office. It will come in handy to get a head start on the process by printing <a title=\"Application for a Social Security Card\" href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsecurity.gov\/ssnumber\/ss5.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Form SS-5 <\/a>and filling it out before you go in.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b style=\"font-size: 16px;\">#2 GET PERSONAL: You\u2019ve taken the steps to make your name change official. \u00a0Now you can get to updating your personal life. \u00a0Let the updating fun begin!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18117\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"5040\" height=\"3360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-4.jpg 5040w, https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-4-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-4-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-4-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-4-50x33.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 5040px) 100vw, 5040px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MAIL<\/span><\/strong>(WHAT YOU <i>MIGHT<\/i> NEED: Updated form of I.D.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To inform the US Postal Service of your name change, you can fill out a <a title=\"USPS Change of Address form\" href=\"https:\/\/moversguide.usps.com\/icoa\/icoa-main-flow.do?execution=e3s1&amp;_flowId=icoa-main-flow&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Change of Address<\/a> form. \u00a0You can do this online or stop by your local post office. \u00a0The USPS website asks that if you are changing your address and receiving mail under more than one name (in this case, your maiden name and your married name) you should fill out two different forms for each name. \u00a0You will probably have mail coming to you under both your maiden and married name for some time, so it\u2019s best to be sure the post office is aware of any name you currently or used to go by.\u00a0 If you have a P.O. box or another separate mailbox (UPS Store, Pak Mail, etc.) be sure they are aware of your name change as well.\u00a0 This brings us to the next category\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MEMBERSHIPS and SUBSCRIPTIONS<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Update any subscriptions or memberships you may have under your former name. \u00a0This includes magazines, newspapers, Jelly of the Month, anything that is sent to you either by mail or email. \u00a0If you belong to any local or national clubs, groups, organizations or perhaps a local co-op, contact them for instruction on how to change your name. \u00a0Subscriptions that are mailed to you may require filling out another change of address with the updated name. \u00a0Memberships include things like\u00a0Costco\/Sam&#8217;s Club, REI, fitness centers, NRA, local museums, Co-ops, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">VEHICLE<\/span><\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>(WHAT YOU NEED: Marriage certificate, photo I.D.)<\/p>\n<p>When you head to your local license center to update your I.D., do yourself a favor and save an extra trip by updating your vehicle title too! \u00a0Each state has its own <a title=\"DMV Title Transfer page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dmv.org\/title-transfers.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">requirements<\/a>, so do your research to see if you have to fill out any extra forms and save yourself some time by filling them out before you get to the DMV! \u00a0When you change your name on your vehicle title, your registration should be automatically updated. \u00a0To manage your insurance policy you will need to get in touch with your provider. \u00a0Every company is different and may require specific forms for you to fill out.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">HEALTH (medical, dental, etc.)<\/span><\/strong>(WHAT YOU NEED: Marriage certificate)<\/p>\n<p>You will need to update your name on your medical records. \u00a0You can send a form <a title=\"Medical Name Change Notice\" href=\"http:\/\/www.namethatbride.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/notice_medical.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">like this<\/a> to each of your medical providers, along with a copy of your marriage certificate so they are aware of the change. \u00a0Get in touch with your medical insurance provider and find out what they require for an official name change.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t forget your chiropractor, massage therapist, physical therapist, or any other specialist you see regularly. \u00a0This is also an opportune time to inform healthcare practitioners that your spouse can have access to your medical records.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">AT YOUR JOB<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Be sure to inform HR of your name change.\u00a0 You will need to fill out an updated W-4 form. \u00a0Also, depending on where you work, you will need to update your name to accommodate your work presence. \u00a0Are you a teacher? \u00a0Let your students know you go by a different name now. \u00a0Wear a name badge? \u00a0Get a new one! \u00a0Do you get paged over an intercom? \u00a0Inform your receptionist.\u00a0 Have business cards or stationary?\u00a0 Get those updated too!\u00a0 These tasks aren&#8217;t quite as urgent, but for consistency&#8217;s sake, be mindful of the people you work with so you don&#8217;t cause confusion.\u00a0 And please, if you have any high security clearance at your job, do let them know you will be going by a different name now.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">SCHOOL (former or current students)<\/span><\/b>(WHAT YOU NEED: Marriage certificate)<\/p>\n<p>Inform the registrar\u2019s office of your name change. \u00a0They will probably require some sort of proof that you\u2019ve changed your name. \u00a0The same goes for those who have already received a diploma. \u00a0Contact the registrar\u2019s office and let them know if you would like your name changed on your transcripts or your degree. \u00a0They may have you fill out an official name change form for their records.<\/p>\n<p><b style=\"font-size: 16px;\">#3 GET FISCAL: You probably want to be sure your money is covered, so jump on top of any financial, billing and repayment accounts as well as your tax documents.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18113\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/18-3948-post\/name-change-01-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/18-3948-post\/name-change-01-2.jpg 1800w, https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/18-3948-post\/name-change-01-2-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/18-3948-post\/name-change-01-2-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/18-3948-post\/name-change-01-2-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/18-3948-post\/name-change-01-2-50x33.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px\" \/><br \/>\n<b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">BANK ACCOUNTS, CREDIT CARD and INVESTMENTS<\/span>\u00a0<\/b>(WHAT YOU NEED: Current form of identification with updated name, and Marriage Certificate)<\/p>\n<p>Each of your financial institutions and credit card companies may have different policies for proving your legal name change.\u00a0 When changing your name at your bank, be sure you also get updated checks and debit cards with your new name so everything is consistent.\u00a0 If you do not change your name on any <a title=\"Financial Accounts Name Change Checklist\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bankrate.com\/insurance\/car-and-home-insurance-bundle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">financial accounts<\/a>, then making deposits or withdraws may prove to be a bit of a hassle.\u00a0 Better to be pro-active on this one so you can be sure all of your finances are in order!<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">BILLS or RENT<\/span>\u00a0<\/b>(WHAT YOU <i>MIGHT<\/i> NEED: Photo I.D. or credit card with updated name, Marriage Certificate)<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the size of the company, you may be able to fill out a form online, but it\u2019s best to get right to the source and call whoever is sending your bills for specific instruction (here\u2019s a brief overview of how to change your name on your <a title=\"Change Name on Electricity Bill\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ehow.com\/how_6756889_change-name-electricity-bill.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">electricity bill<\/a>).\u00a0 If you are renting property, be sure to get in touch with your landlord so he\/she is aware that your rent checks will be coming from a different name.\u00a0 If you have an account number with your billing companies, some may assign a new one to you.\u00a0 Some companies may require you to simply provide proof of your new name, while others may require a bit more work\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">LOANS (INCLUDING STUDENT LOANS)<\/span>\u00a0<\/b>(WHAT YOU <i>MIGHT <\/i>NEED: Marriage certificate, updated form of I.D.)<\/p>\n<p>Make sure your loan repayment company is aware that you have a different name.\u00a0 They\u2019re already hunting you down for your money\u2026 so you don\u2019t want to give them a reason to think you\u2019ve up and changed your identity to avoid your debt. \u00a0You are encouraged to send in your passport and other official documents using a <a title=\"Passport tips\" href=\"http:\/\/travel.state.gov\/passport\/forms\/forms_4553.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">traceable delivery method.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">LAST WILL<\/span>\u00a0<\/b>(WHAT YOU <i>MIGHT<\/i> NEED: Codicil)<\/p>\n<p>In the past, when making a minor update to your Last Will and Testament (like a name change) you would fill out a codicil. \u00a0While this might sound more like some crazy prescription drug, it\u2019s not (at least not yet). \u00a0A codicil is a legal document that has been around since the 1400\u2019s, and can be used to make minor changes to your will. \u00a0However, you may just be able to tack the <a title=\"Legal Encyclopedia - Codidil or Noted Change\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nolo.com\/legal-encyclopedia\/why-not-make-codicil.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">noted change<\/a> on to the end of your will and sign it in front of two witnesses. \u00a0Check your local laws or get the inside scoop from a lawyer if you want the best answer.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">VOTER REGISTRATION<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(WHAT YOU NEED: Updated form of I.D. and updated Social Security card)<\/p>\n<p>Each state has its own requirements. \u00a0Generally, if you are already registered to vote and have not moved outside of the county you were already registered in, you can provide proof of I.D. and your updated Social Security card to get the job done. \u00a0If you have moved outside of your formerly registered county, you will need to re-register to vote.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>#5\u00a0<\/b><strong>A FEW MORE THINGS:<\/strong> <strong>To keep your mind chugging along on the name-change train, here are a few more specifics that weren&#8217;t mentioned in the information above&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18122\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4151\" height=\"2767\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-6.jpg 4151w, https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-6-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-6-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-6-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.brovadoweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/21-3948-post\/name-change-01-6-50x33.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 4151px) 100vw, 4151px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">EMAIL ACCOUNTS<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, Outlook, and any work email accounts that use your entire name.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">AIRLINE COMPANY<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a part of a mileage rewards program, make sure they&#8217;re in the loop.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">FITNESS CENTERS<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Yoga studio, climbing gym, health club&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">OTHER ONLINE ACCOUNTS<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Ebay, PayPal, Netflix, Facebook, Twitter, iTunes, the list goes on&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">FOUR LEGGED FRIENDS<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Veterinarian, pet groomer&#8230; and don&#8217;t forget to tell your pet!<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ROUNDING OUT THE LIST<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Even with a full list, you&#8217;ll find yourself changing your name in places you never thought about.
