I have been blessed by the many opportunities I have had to develop my skills as a photographer over the years.\u00a0 Many of the tricks I have learned from professional, in the field photographers and photojournalists.\u00a0 One of my greatest mentors, a National Geographic Photographer, taught me a focus and EF lock technique that revolutionized the way I took pictures.\u00a0 That simple, yet incredibly powerful technique is not taught in photo schools or listed in books, and it is even difficult to find online.\u00a0 I also don’t know of any photo schools that teach photographers how to communicate clear, direct, and calming instructions to a stressed bride on her wedding day.\u00a0 Having effective communication on a wedding day, or during any photo shoot, is even more important than your skills behind the lens.\u00a0 Learning to be a professional photographer was never an easy task for me.\u00a0 I struggled to find photography teachers who knew enough about photography, communication, business skills, and marketing that I felt they were qualified to teach me.\u00a0 It seemed that most of the “professionals” in the industry never wanted to share a peep about what they were doing, out of fear that someone would steal their ideas.\u00a0 I don’t agree with this kind of thinking.
