#thesweetlife | Zach & Coty

Sunset silhouette of Zach and Coty

You may remember these two from their stunning engagement shoot in Denver, CO with our Associate Photographer Brooke. Well, Brooke captured their wedding that somehow beat those incredible Denver shots!

Zach and Coty flew from Colorado to have their ceremony at Coty’s parent’s home in rural Minnesota. Having their day at a place that is familiar, the two were able to decorate the venue in a way that was entirely theirs. Their details placed an emphasis on rustic elements, their ceremony and reception studded with antlers and cross-sections of trees, with a stunning Kransekake as their wedding cake. Zach and Coty perfectly blended their own style with tradition. Coty is a bride who can rock red Jimmy Choos and dark lipstick, but also wore her veil while walking down the aisle, something that you don’t see many brides do any more.

While we could talk about the connection between Zach and Coty for hours, one that isn’t always focused on is the bond between the bride and her father.  Coty’s father was a blast, fully enjoying his daughter’s big day. He took not one, not two, but three shots during his speech. But that’s not the most noteworthy part of his speech. While he spoke, you could see the love that he has for his daughter and the respect that he holds for her. He spoke to Coty’s time in college in Wyoming and her independent nature, which is perfectly complemented by Zach’s good-natured demeanor. Needless to say, everyone was at least a little misty-eyed during Coty’s first dance with her father.

The joining of Zach and Coty, and their families, was a truly illuminating thing to watch. Seeing two people so in love, and their families so in love with them together, is a beautiful thing. With such intense love, two people are able to melt into each other and feel true comfort, which is obvious in how these two photograph together. Zach and Coty’s sunset shots are especially jaw-dropping. Being able to pull them away from their reception, once all of the day stress had melted away, allowed for some of the most honest, raw moments you can capture. These two were a joy to photograph, and we don’t doubt that Zach and Coty will be each other’s joy for the rest of their lives.

Keep Being Cool | Katie + John’s Nuptials in Downtown Minneapolis

Summer Minneapolis Wedding at the Depot

Katie and John had a super elegant wedding. With a live band, slick tuxedos, dancing between dinner courses. East Coast style. These two are just cool. The kind of people that glide through life, in a way that makes you want to be like them. I had so much fun photographing their wedding at the Depot in downtown Minneapolis. Everything about it was classy. The venue, the outfits, the guests. The band, R Factor was one of the best I’ve ever heard at a wedding! I’m not kidding when I say that every single guest was on the dance floor while they played.  This wedding will go down in history as one of my favorites, out of literally hundreds of weddings over the years. Congratulations, Katie and John! Keep being cool. B-)

Rain, Tears & Happiness | A Stormy St. Paul Wedding

Rainy St Paul Wedding at Intercontinental Hotel Riverfront

Where do you take pictures on a rainy wedding day? Under anything you can! Utilize bridges, overpasses, awnings, umbrellas and large trees.

Ashley and Colin’s wedding day was a whirlwind of emotion. Only the happiest of emotions, of course. But there were still a lot of tears.

This was because Ashley and Colin were simply overjoyed to make it official. Every detail had been sorted out, and the couple spent some time getting ready in the morning… They opened sweet love letters from each other, and there were some tears.  Ashley put on her Rush’s Bridal gown, and had her hair and makeup done by The Blushing Room in a way that made her brilliant blue eyes pop even more, and there were more tears.  When she walked outside to see Colin for the first time, you should have seen it… Actually, you can! Just scroll down to see how ridiculously happy these two were to see each other on their wedding day!

Yes, it rained, and it rained some more. We took lots of pictures under bridges, overpasses and in parking garages (which actually turned out pretty great.) But they say rain on your wedding day is a good omen, and I say, so are tears.

Congratulations, Ashley and Colin! You two are perfect for each other!

Trains, Docks and Kelseyisms | Engagement Photos on Lake Minnetonka

Kelsey and Robbie are simply great.  They’re my kind of people – adventurous, talented, always smiling, and they don’t take themselves too seriously. We all met up earlier this year on Maui. Since my wife and I live on the island during the winters, I was able to do a destination engagement photo shoot for Robbie and Kelsey when they took a trip out there in February. Unfortunately, the only day we were all able to meet also happened to be the only day it poured rain for hours and hours in Wailea where we were shooting. So we decided to give it another go this summer in Minnesota.

Kelsey and Robbie met me last week at the Wayzata Yacht Club to take some more engagement pictures on Lake Minnetonka. They were so much fun to photograph – playful and beautiful… the best kind of subjects! I learned that they met while skydiving. But of course!

When I asked them about their proposal story, Kelsey told me about how she’d almost ruined Robbie’s master plan by double booking their calendar, and how Robbie pulled it off anyway by sneaking off with her car to go “get gas” later that night. When he called her after a half hour with a supposed flat tire, she was a little miffed about having to go rescue him instead of getting ready for bed. I only hope she was wearing pajama pants when she left the house…

You see, Kelsey and Robbie’s first date didn’t go according to plan either. She ended up being sick on the day they were supposed to get together, so instead they made the best of it and decided to stay in and watch movies in their sweatpants. They called it Sweatpant Sunday.

Back to the night of the proposal (which was on a Sunday)… when Kelsey found Robbie, he was on the side of the road wearing a suit jacket, a nice shirt, a tie, and sweatpants. At first this irked her even more because she thought he’d been dilly-dallying around with outfits while he was supposed to be getting gas for her car, and this was just another thing preventing her from crawling into bed! But he simply took her hand and led her down a path that went behind the Carlson Towers, and that’s when she saw it – a pavilion decorated with romantic lights and flowers everywhere.

“Robbie got down on one knee and I immediately starting crying and said, ‘YES!’ probably about 100 times. It was a beautiful moment and all my frustration instantly disappeared. As we were walking back to the car, I said, ‘Well let’s get that tire fixed!’ and Robbie started laughing. Then he told me there was never actually a flat tire,” recalls Kelsey. From what I hear, her family might have called that last bit a “Kelseyism.”

Enjoy these engagement photos, you two! I can’t wait for your wedding!

Summer Love | Maria + Scott on the Stone Arch Bridge

Another wonder of the modern world… Maria and Scott met online, and now they’re engaged! Here’s a story of hope for those who are searching for love….

Maria instantly knew she would like Scott when she saw a picture of him online. “He was looking over his shoulder in front of sink where he was washing dishes. The hair on the back of his head was standing straight up. I was immediately drawn to his modest charm and obvious sense of humor,” she says.

Three years later, Scott proposed to Maria at her favorite restaurant in New York City. He did it sweetly and privately after the place had cleared out in the evening. It was pretty darn romantic, and Maria loved it.

I met Maria and Scott at the Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis for their engagement photo shoot this summer. I was struck by how comfortable they are with one another. They clearly enjoy each other’s company.

We took several pictures up on the bridge with the Minneapolis skyline in the background, down along the paths of Father Hennepin Park, and out on St. Anthony Main. We even ran into my wife, Liz, when she pulled up on her motorcycle to say hi! It was the perfect night for a ride… Which also meant it was a perfect night for photos! Maria, Scott and I got to take advantage of the warm light filtering through the trees in the late evening. Cottonwood floating about provided a quintessential summertime speckling effect in some photos, and we got some cool sunset camera flares a bit later.

I had a great time with you two, Maria and Scott! Enjoy your engagement pictures!
