I took my camera along last week to the Defiant Tattoo studio in Minneapolis to watch Liz get some detail work done on her Tattoo sleeve. I’ve never taken pictures of Tattoos before so this was really fun for me. I used some Cross Processing here to make the tattoos really pop. The pictures turned out fantastic! And now I know where to go if I ever decide I want a tattoo! Take a look at the pictures!

A Trip to Minnesota’s North Shore With a Holocaust Survivor and His Wife

Annie and I had a very unique opportunity to take a holocaust survivor, Yosi, and his wife Tamar on a tour of Minnesota’s beautiful north shore. Annie and I stayed with Yosi and Tamar back in 2007 while on vacation in Israel. In gratitude, we told Yosi and Tamar that the next time they came to the United States we would have to take them on a tour of Minnesota’s North Shore, so we did!

Yosi survived the holocaust because of the Kindertransport (Refugee Children Movement,) a rescue mission that took place nine months prior to the outbreak of World War II.

The United Kingdom took in nearly 10,000 predominantly Jewish children from Nazi Germany, and the occupied territories of Austria, Czechoslovakia, and the Free City of Danzig. The children were placed in British foster homes, hostels, and farms. Yosi was on the last train allowed to leave before the war started, narrowly escaping.

Foraging for food in Wisconsin – June 2008

Foraging for food is a great way to detoxify the body and discover the amazing diversity of edible plants we walk past and dismiss daily. Last weekend, a small group of us got together and went to River Haven, Wisconsin , for a three day lesson to learn what is edible, and more importantly what it would be like to survive on a pure plant based diet in nature if we ever needed to. All you really need is a sense of adventure, an open mind… and an open mouth!

The rules for the foraging trip were simple. We must eat everything we find in their raw and natural state, no altering the food by cooking or fire. This insures that we are getting the maximum nutrients out of each plant so our bodies could detoxify and heal!

Foraging in the Midwest was actually easier than I thought. Initially I had expected a large number of foods to be inedible and actually poisonous or toxic. As it turns out, 99% of the plants you see (excluding mushrooms) are edible, nutritious, and surprisingly quite tasty! The Law of Attraction is the best way to determine what is and isn’t edible. If the plant you are about to eat passes a few basic tests, it is probably edible. 1. Does it look appealing? When it is picked and smelled, is the smell appealing? When it is touched to the tongue and lips is there any burning or tingling? Does it taste bitter or rancid? Is it difficult to chew or swallow? If you answered YES to any of the last 3 questions, you know what isn’t edible.

We tasted just about everything we could get our hands on. Roots, bark, leaves, weeds, pine needles, etc.; you name it, we probably tried eating it. When Carol, our herbalist, arrived, it was amazing to discover that the foods we had selected using the Law of Attraction were some of the healthiest and medicinal plants around.

The food available to forage in the Midwest states in the early months of summer are mostly greens. Our group found around 25 different varieties of tasty greens which we regularly ate and are included in the picture gallery below, along with a detailed description of each plant.

Our next foraging trip at River Haven, WI is on August 8, 9 and 10. This trip will include some of my favorites to eat, blackberries! A New Addition To Our Family

To everyone who has been asking to see pictures of our new dog ECO, you can stop asking now because I am posting pictures of him!

Annie and I adopted Eco from a program called UnderDog Rescue. He was a stray and taken by Minneapolis animal control about 6 weeks ago. UnderDog Rescue quickly took him from animal control before he was euthanized and put him with a foster family where he was nursed back to health. He was extremely thin, had frostbite on this snout and had a pretty bad infection, and showed all the signs of abandonment and abuse. Annie and I had been looking for a small dog for some time, and when we found Eco, we knew he was ours!

Eco is a Toy Rat Terrier, weighs about 10lbs, and is 8 months old. He takes a little bit to warm up to new people, which is expected given his past… but once he learns that you are not going to hurt him he will be your best friend. He has a wonderful temperament and is extremely loyal. He never lets us out of his sight. Eco loves balls and never gets sick of fetch! We have only had him for about a week now, and he is wonderful! He love to cuddle and his most favorite thing in the world is to be held. Even more than playing fetch! He wakes us up promptly at 6:00am to go to the bathroom, and then is ready to play. He certainly is the best alarm clock we have ever owned.
