An Indian Wedding in Minneapolis | Day 1: Gaye Holud / Mayon Ceremony

This is one of the most fun Minnesota weddings I’ve ever photographed!  Since Rosina’s family is from India and Matt’s is from the United States, this couple decided to have a wedding that incorporated many elements of both Indian and American wedding traditions.  All in all, the festivities lasted for THREE FULL DAYS, and I was lucky enough to participate in all of them – photographing their Gaye Holud (or Mayon) ceremony at Rosina’s father’s home, their Mehndi celebration on the eve of their wedding, and the wedding day itself, which featured a traditional American wedding ceremony and a lavish and elaborately colorful Indian wedding reception at the Depot in Minneapolis.

During the Gaye Holud (also called the Mayon), Rosina was dressed by her family members in traditional clothing and jewelry.  Her hands and feet had already been ornately decorated with henna.  Once she was ready, she and her family waited for Matt to arrive.  When he entered the house, he was visibly stunned by her beauty (so cute!), and wrapped her in a sweet embrace in front of the whole family.  Soon afterwards, more guests arrived and made a grand entrance complete with drums, dancing, and a musical procession.  The whole family joined in the dancing, and then they led Rosina and Matt to sit down in chairs so they could each greet them in turn by spoon feeding them sweets and rubbing turmeric on their skin, as is Mayon tradition.  As you can see by the wedding photos, this part might have gotten a little out of hand…

I enjoyed being a part of this tradition very much, and I hope you enjoy the pictures!  Please share them with your friends by posting this link to Facebook or Twitter!  And be sure to stay tuned for parts two, three and four of this elaborate Indian wedding in Minneapolis! Coming soon… Part 2: Mehndi Celebration, and parts 3 and 4: the wedding ceremony and wedding reception!

Minneapolis Engagement Pictures | Candace + James

Look at these daredevils!  Not only did we have an amazing time photographing Candace and James’ engagement portraits (on land) at Black Bear Crossings near Como Park in St. Paul, MN… but at the very end, they ran to the end of the dock and leapt into the water!  It shows how committed they are to “taking the plunge” next year.  🙂  I can’t wait to photograph their wedding in May – I know this couple will be amazingly fun to work with!

Semple Mansion Wedding #2 | Brittany + Mike

Two Semple Mansion weddings in just one weekend!  After photographing Jayme & Mike’s wedding at this beautiful location on Saturday, I came right back to shoot Brittany & Mike’s wedding on Sunday!  Lucky for me, this gorgeous wedding venue is just 5 blocks from my house   🙂

After getting engaged in front of all her closest friends at her sorority’s spring formal, Brittany Makal was looking forward to just one thing…. The feeling she would get as she walked down the aisle toward the one man with whom she would spend the rest of her life.

“When the string trio started playing Ave Maria, everything got real.  It suddenly wasn’t about my hair, about some decoration not working out, about the drunk groomsmen.  It suddenly became about me and my mom waiting to walk down to my husband.  Growing up, I was never the bride that dreamed of details for my wedding.  I did, however, dream of this emotion.  Of feeling like I am walking toward the best thing that will ever happen to me.  Holding my mom’s hand and waiting, that is what I remember the most about my wedding day.”

Isn’t that beautiful?  It really was a dream come true for Brittany, and I was lucky to be the one there to capture those sweet moments.

“The thing that I appreciate and absolutely love about working with Preston is that he makes sure that the bride knows she is the focus for him.  He asks if you need water, and even if you say no, he makes you drink water!  He yells at the stupid groomsmen when the bride looks like she’s getting upset.  He takes care of the bride.  He’s almost a second personal assistant.  He’s pretty great!!”

Aww, thank you for those kind words, Brittany!  I think you and Mike are pretty great too!  Here’s to a wonderful marriage, and a wonderful life together!

A Wedding at the Semple Mansion

MN Wedding at the Semple Mansion

Jayme and Mike were high school sweethearts.  In fact, even at the age of 15, they both knew they had always been, and would always be, “that person” for each other.  Isn’t that a true love story?  When they got married this year in Minneapolis, their wedding was like the ending of a fairytale.  To Jayme, the ceremony itself was the most special part of the day.  It made her love story official.  And since her own brother was officiating, it was personal. Familial.

“It was amazing to see all the people we love in the room to witness it and share it with us,” she says.

The ceremony was beautiful.  I had the privilege of photographing Jayme and Mike’s wedding at the luxurious Semple Mansion in Minneapolis.  Quite an excellent venue for wedding photography;  it’s historic, and has a degree of sophistication, ornateness, elegance… it’s almost royal.  (That must be why it’s won awards in Minnesota Bride Magazine every single year since it opened for weddings in 2007!)

We shot Jayme and Mike’s bride and groom portraits near Lake Harriet at the Lyndale Park Gardens’ beautiful Japanese-style Peace Garden.  The newlyweds wandered under willow trees and across the zig-zagging Peace Garden Bridge, which is constructed out of wood, Minnesota granite, copper, and two stones from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan that were given to our city as a symbol of peace with regards to the bombing of those two cities during WWII.  Japanese tradition believes that evil spirits walk only in straight lines, so the zigzag bridge prevents them from following people into the garden.

In the evening, the couple enjoyed a wedding reception in the Semple Mansion’s Grand Palladian Ballroom, where Jayme’s sister and Maid of Honor revealed all of the hilarious traits that qualified Mike as a bona fide rock star, which was important considering Jayme’s intense love of rock music.  This was indeed a match made in heaven.

After dinner, Jayme, Mike and their wedding guests had fun posing in our Antibooth photo station!  The Antibooth is a wedding photography add-on available to all of our clients.  It features hundreds of props, a professional backdrop (when needed – the Semple Mansion had a great space that didn’t require a backdrop), a real live professional photographer, and the ability to fit 10+ people in each photo, making it far superior to a traditional photo booth.  Pictures are professionally edited and printed on the spot, and your guests get to take home as many of these archive quality 4×6″ prints as they desire.  Plus, clients get all of the digital copies included on their wedding disk.  It’s been a popular add-on for the past couple years… scroll to the bottom of this post to see why!

Fort Snelling Wedding Photos | Lindsay + Brad

Linday Heagle is not afraid of heights.  There’s a pretty cute story about that…

“We were at the top of the Willis (formerly Sears) tower on the Sky Deck, a glass balcony that extends out over the city.  Brad looked at me and asked me if I was afraid being up so high.   I replied, ‘No.’  And he told me he wasn’t either.  Then he looked into my eyes and said, ‘You know what else I’m not afraid of?  Spending the rest of my life with you.’  He got down on one knee with the ring…  and of course I said yes!  There was a crowd of people waiting in line behind us, and one man was kind enough to capture it while it was happening.  It was so neat!  As you can tell from the pictures, I was very surprised!”

Is that a cute wedding proposal story or what?  On top of the Sears Tower!  The stuff of dreams!  (Good job, Brad.)  A year later, Lindsay and Brad got married at the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel in Minneapolis.   I was lucky enough to photograph their wedding and get to know this sweet couple and their love story.  Lindsay told me her wedding day was perfect…

“I wasn’t stressed, or anxious at all.  I was relaxed and smiling almost every minute.  I felt like a princess all day!”  (She also had some nice things to say about her wedding photographer…  “We loved working with Preston and we love our wedding photos!”)   🙂

I loved working with you too, Lindsay!  Congratulations to you both!
