What a beautiful day for engagement pictures!  We started the afternoon with engagement pictures at Como Park.  The greenery and flowers were refreshing to see after the long winter we’ve endured.  We ended with pictures at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden at the Walker Art Center.  I can’t wait to take your wedding pictures at the […]

Nicole Jonas - Heya Preston!! 🙂 Long time no see!

I was just wondering… I am going to be doing some engagement portraits in a couple weeks, and I’m trying to think of some good poses to use. I wanted to ask, what is your favorites? Anything unique or interesting you think I might be able to try? 😉

    Preston Palmer - Nicole,

It’s fantastic you are getting into photography the way you are! To answer your question about poses– I NEVER use poses! Before I take pictures with a client, I always meet with them first to find out if our personalities and my style match them. I have turned down clients before because I felt we did not have a good connection. I must be able to capture the emotions and feelings of the people I work with, or I shouldn’t be taking their pictures. With every one of my wedding packages, the engagement session is included free of charge. This is my opportunity to get to know the couple, get comfortable with them, and work out any kinks in style, and really find out what they are looking for. More or less this is a trial run for the actual wedding. I do not take engagement pictures of anyone unless I am also taking pictures of their wedding…

So, in short! I never sit a couple together and pose them for a picture. I want the couple to be comfortable with my presence, so much so that I become invisible to them. When that happens the couple becomes who they are together, and that is what I am there to capture. Of course sometime I ask someone to move a little or step up higher so the picture is composed better, but for the most part, I am letting the couple be themselves and capturing it along the way. This is the same way I shoot weddings. Because I use this style / technique, EVERY client will get completely unique and original pictures that fit them. I am not into cookie cutter production line images. I want each engagement and wedding to be completely unique, and completely catered to each couple.

Paul Campbell - Well like my wife said… WOW! I knew that you were good, but I was shocked at how well these photos turned out! Preston, you really out did yourself on this one. It would be hard to top this job! Your eye for the moment and understanding of your surroundings translates to breath taking shots. I was looking for some nice wedding pictures to have to show to my kids one day, but what I got was art… art that could be displayed in a museum! I was impressed with your professionalism and how easy you made it for Becca and I. Whenever I need professional photos for any reason I will be calling you up. My brother and I will also be using your services for our future music and press packages for our music production group, the Black Irishmen. Words can really not express our gratitude for what you gave to my wife and I. Thank you, thank you, and thank you!

Kathy Tyler Stetz - I have to tell you that I love all the pictures. When I brought the album from the wedding to the reception people loved them. I love that you have an adventurious side that gives different pictures that turn out beautifully. I can’t wait to see your favorites from the reception and the walk in the woods we did at Tayolor’s Falls. Adiel said you were worth it and I have to say he was right. I have to say I wouldn’t use any other photographer. Thank You for capturing our events.
